The Indonesian Way
Level: Beginner
“The Indonesian Way” is under development. Even though it is already fully functional, we advise from time to time to update to the newest version. Updates will be posted twice a year.
Last Update: 01 Jan 2012 Next Update: approximately 01 May 2012

The Indonesian Way (TIW) by George Quinn and Uli Kozok consists of 105 lessons and is aimed for beginners of the Indonesian Language (bahasa Indonesia).  We use TIW as out main teaching material for the first and second, and also part of the third semester. Per week we cover three lessons.

“The Indonesian Way”, originally composed by G. Quinn, was enhanced, and adapted for online learning by the Indonesian Language Program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa between 2009 and 2011 .

On successful completion of TIW, students will be able to demonstrate:

  • familiarity with the phonology (pronunciation, word-stress, rhythm, intonation), morphology (general overview of affix system) and syntax (word order, sentence construction; phrase order in declarative and interrogative sentence) of the Indonesian language;
  • familiarity with about 1,500 most frequently used words necessary for communicative competence;
  • within this communicative competence, the ability to: a) comprehend basic standard spoken Indonesian; b) perform simple conversation in an intelligent way; c) read elementary passages and stories with a fair degree of comprehension; d) write simple descriptions of objects, situations and activities and write short-non-technical letters; e) recognize and utilize basic rules in Indonesian grammar; f) integrate the linguistic skills specified above;

You can use this material either by:

  • Enrolling in IND 103 (Start Date: 20 August 2012). There  is a small tuition fee, but you will get all the benefits of being enrolled in a university course: you get official credit, you will be supervised by a professional instructor, there will be weekly homework assignments and quizzes, and you will be part of a larger online learner community where you will communicate with your fellow classmates and your tutor, mainly in Indonesian, through a discussion forum.
  • Using the material yourself, and at your own pace: Click here for Lesson Access.
